Malaysia belongs to all

So says the newly elected Opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim. This is obviously a reference to Bukit Bendera’s UMNO Division Chief, Ahmad Ismail’s statement calling the Chinese in Malaysia as “pendatang” or immigrants. First of all, the statement of the UMNO Division Chief is factually wrong. That I have to say and the Prime Minister who is also UMNO’s President need to strongly rebuke that. I am not sure if the statement is racist in nature but it is surely insensitive especially when you’re soliciting for votes from Malaysians during the Permatang Pauh by election.

Whether Ahmad Ismail meant it or not, whatever that means, anyone hearing it would agree that it was done without any care to the feelings of a good number of Malaysians. UMNO should send a message to its members that those kind of sentiments cannot belong to a party that is fighting for equality for all Malaysians. Though UMNO is a malay based party, UMNO itself drives the Government and when it represents the Government, it represents all Malaysians. If it cannot represent the interest of all Malaysians, then its days are numbered. At the very least, Ahmad Ismail should be suspended. Being a malay doesn’t give me the passport to start lambasting everyone who is not one. A malay should be foremost fair. While malays ensure success, that does not give it a right to take it from others.

UMNO should remind its members that politics of Ahmad Ismail’s kind is never accepted. It cannot survive and will always be ignored.
